Antiblanks partnered with Quint Studios to develop Surface, a sophisticated browser-based parametric animation design tool. Building on an application initially developed by Quint Co-Founder Peter Dickinson, Antiblanks were tasked with developing the back-end architecture, integrating subscriptions and taking the product from an early-stage build to a stable, scalable and production-ready web application.

Backstory

A Longstanding Creative Technology Partnership Built on Previous Success.

Quint Co-Founder Peter Dickinson and Antiblanks have a longstanding working relationship, having previously collaborated on the development of Plays, a mobile animation design kit. When Quint needed a trusted technical partner to help bring Surface to market, Antiblanks were brought in for our understanding of the product vision and our experience turning ambitious creative concepts into robust, production-ready digital products.

Problem

Quint Studios Had Developed the Foundations of an Innovative Parametric Animation Tool, but a Number of Technical and Commercial Challenges Needed to Be Solved Before Surface Could Be Launched as a Production-Ready Product.

1. Cross-Browser Compatibility

Surface needed to provide a consistent and reliable experience across supported desktop browsers, ensuring its sophisticated animation and design functionality behaved as expected for different users.

2. Real-Time Data Persistence

Users needed to be able to securely save their work and return to their creations across different sessions and devices, requiring a robust cloud-based approach to authentication, storage and data persistence.

3. Flexible Subscription Model

Surface required a fully integrated payment and subscription system capable of supporting multiple membership tiers, billing cadences, promotional offers and discount coupons.

4. Premium Application Performance

As a creative design tool, Surface needed to feel responsive and immediate. Loading had to be kept to a minimum, with smooth transitions and fast interactions helping the application feel like a premium desktop product within the browser.

5. Speed to Market

Interest in parametric animation was growing rapidly. Quint Studios saw an opportunity to establish Surface as one of the first sophisticated products in the space, making the ability to move quickly from prototype to production critical.

Solution

1. Jamstack Front-End

Surface was developed using Next.js, React and Tailwind CSS, providing a modern front-end architecture capable of delivering the responsive, high-performance experience required by a sophisticated browser-based design tool.

2. Firebase Back-End

A scalable Firebase architecture was implemented using Firestore, Firebase Storage and Authentication, providing secure user accounts alongside reliable cloud storage and persistence for users' projects and creations.

3. Stripe Payments & Subscriptions

Stripe was integrated to provide Surface with a flexible commercial model, supporting subscription products, different membership options and promotional coupons while securely managing recurring payments.

4. Production Readiness & Optimisation

Antiblanks worked through the existing application to resolve compatibility issues, optimise performance and strengthen the overall architecture, transforming the original build into a stable product ready for commercial launch.
